- Clear for what? It depends on the issue.
- Ask a vet. They can run blood tests to make sure.
- A carrier of what? The vet either way would be the best bet. Why were dogs that carried a disease bred? You do plan on nuetering so as not to pass on what ever the parents have right?
- What breed? And carrier for what? His mother should not have been bred at all. Odds are he as well is a carrier so be prepared to have him fixed. Vet.
- what is the health problem you want checked? If its an eye problem.. you need to get a CERF test done from a Canine Opthamologist.. there are sometimes also CERF clinics held at dog shows. CERF ratings are only good for one year tho. You can also check into Optigen.. depending on the breed, will depend on what they can test for.. www.optigen.com If its an orthopedic thing, I do beleive you need to get an xray from you vet to send in to the OFA www.offa.org
- Go to your vet. If your dog turns out to be a carrier, don't breed it.
- Just call up a local vet and get an appointment. They'll be able to run any tests that you want information about. If you've never had a dog before so you don't have a regular vet, ask someone you know who has a dog and ask if they have a reccomendation. That way, you'll be sure you're going to a good vet. ADD: and since his mother was a "carrier", she really shouldn't have been bred. I hope you're not planning on breeding this pup and possibly passing on whatever she was carrying!
- Contact your vet, set up an appointment to get your dog neutered. Whatever it's a "carrier" of, it shouldn't be passed on.
- Well, I just looked at your profile and answers, so I'm guessing that you are talking about VWD (von willibrands disease) in Dobermans. You would need to contact Vet Gen to do a DNA test. I believe(don't quote me) that the ratio on breeding a Clear to a Carrier is that 50% of the litter will be carriers, and 50% will be clears. Why don't you google Vet Gen and see if you can order the test. The old elisa tests are not very accurate. Hope I helped.
- If you are asking about vWD in Dobermanns, you can get a DNA testing kit from Dr Jeff Sampson: http://www.welshdobermann.co.uk/vwd.htm To those who say carrier parents should not be bred - there is such a thing as throwing the baby out with the bathwater - if only such things were as clear cut as some people seem to think!
- your vet should tell you.
