what are the health concerns of a dog with an underbite?
I am interested in buying a relatively new breed (10 years in development). I am told the next litter due is from parents with an underbite...most likely the puppies will also have this. I am not so concerned about the look, but rather the health implications.

- Health concerns with an underbite are minimal, unless it is a serious underbite. In that case the dog may need soft food. Many flat faced breeds do have an underbite. It is not a flaw unless the breed standard prohibits it. But if these breeders mention it, it is prolly NOT in their breed standard. However, if indeed it is a flaw, I would never adopt a dog from breeders that would allow that imperfection in their breeding program. That particular problem will stay with their lineage forever. It can't be bred out. These people are NOT responsible breeders, and may not be resposible in other aspects of their breeding program.
- The only thing that I found about underbite problems was their lower teeth can get caught on their jowls. They can rip the flesh and cause sores. My tomcat has really long fangs and they sometimes puncture his lip. I just disinfect the wound and watch to make sure they heal.
- i have a dog with an underbite and he has had no problems. He is now 9 years old
